Road Rules 101: What happens to carpool lane cheaters?

Running late and wondering if it might be worth it to jump (illegally) into the carpool lane? Think twice! Doing the solo no-no in Washington and Oregon can cost you!

1. Carpool Lane Violation Fines in Washington

In 2019, Washington toughened up its fines for carpool cheaters: $186 for a first offense; $336 if you're caught again within two years and $686 if you're caught yet again. Add a dummy to pose as a passenger – even one as freakishly lifelike as this one – and you'll boost your fine by $200.

 2. Carpool Lane Violation Fines in Oregon

It's no joyride in Oregon, either. Although the state has limited carpool lanes (a stretch of urban I-5) compared to Washington, a carpool lane ticket is $260 with potentially higher fines for repeat offenders.

The last time PEMCO polled Northwesterners on carpool lane use, the vast majority of drivers said they never duck into the carpool lane when they know they don't qualify. Among those who admit to doing it, younger drivers outnumbered older drivers. While most drivers agreed the penalties for violators were about right, 58% said they think cheaters rarely or never get caught. Check out all the responses to our PEMCO Northwest Poll.
