Opal Creek

A 13-mile hike along with the Little North Santiam River. This hike is great walk through a vast old growth forest. At 2 miles you reach the historic Merten Mill, built in 1943, a steam-powered sawmill that logged five of the surrounding acres. A steam engine repurposed from the U.S.S. Battleship Oregon still lies in the clearing.

You’ll need a Forest Service parking permit to park at the trailhead – it’s $5 per car for a one-day pass, or $30 for a full-year pass. Directions
