NW Poll: PNW says reading matters, but kids face barriers to reading for fun
Well, we can all agree – screens are fighting for kids’ attention more than ever. According to the latest PEMCO Insurance Northwest Poll, 59% of Pacific Northwest residents say TV, phones, and video games are the biggest reason kids aren’t reading more for fun.
Still, most people believe wholeheartedly in the power of reading. Nearly all respondents (93%) say reading skills are essential for a child’s success — and 70% say audiobooks ‘count’ as reading, especially among younger adults. When it comes to building strong reading habits, physical books are still seen as the best tool, chosen by 79% of respondents.
The good news? Role models matter. About one in four (26%) say that seeing someone they admire — like a parent, teacher, or public figure — helps encourage kids to read. That’s why PEMCO partners with the Seattle Seahawks on the 12 Pages Reading Program, helping make reading feel fun and accessible.
This summer, PEMCO and the Seahawks are teaming up again for the Supply Surge Book & Supply Drive, bringing donations to 12 schools serving students most in need. The books and supplies donated will go directly to kids in our communities who may not otherwise receive the tools they need to thrive during the school year.
