Spokane County drivers, you’ve been outed.
In a 2013 study conducted by the Univ. of Washington and Harborview, researchers observed drivers at intersections across the state. In Spokane County, 14.5% talked or texted on their cellphones, the highest percentage in Washington.
Whatcom County drivers had the second-highest usage at 12.5%, while Snohomish County had the lowest, 4.3%. In populous King County, 9% of drivers talked or texted while driving.
Using a hand-held cell phone has been illegal in Washington since 2008.
The consequences can be deadly. A 20-year-old driver died last fall when, while texting a friend, he crossed the centerline of U.S. 195 and crashed into a semitruck.
Five years ago, a 16-year-old girl crashed while talking on her cellphone and died on an icy road north of Spokane.
