Primates are known for being the most raucous exhibit at Woodland Park Zoo. It only makes sense that Section 120, home of Gorilla FC, would be the most raucous section at Qwest Field. They are fans who have literally gone ape over soccer.
Brad, Peter and I headed down to Qwest Field Thursday night to see Sounders FC take on Real Salt Lake. While taking "I know I am, I'm sure I am" Sounders FC Fan photos we met Katie Pendleton and Jason Young from Gorilla FC. We were so impressed by their enthusiasm and love for the game that we made Gorilla FC our Sounders FC supporter group spotlight. We had a few questions for them about their troop of standout fans.
Let's start with the Gorilla FC name - how did that come about?
Jason: Guerilla FC was originally a small club soccer team started by one of our founders, and when we decided to bring everyone together in a supporter group for the Sounders, the Gorilla FC name was a fun way to represent values shared by the original members of the team.
Can you tell us about some of those values?
Jason: We're an Antifa supporter group, meaning anti-fascist, anti-racist,and anti-homophobic. It has basis in the religious conflict that has affected teams in Ireland. We try to create an all-encompassing, welcoming environment, where no one feels threatened or intimidated.
You also do community benefits and fundraisers. Why is that important to Gorilla FC?
Jason: There are very few things that bring people together like sport, and we want to use our position to create good things out of it.
Katie: We've got a great one coming up with Sounders mid-fielder James Riley for the Renton/Skyway Boys and Girls Club. Visit our website and take a look!
Besides "I know I am, I'm sure I am" Sounders FC Fan, what NW Profile do you think best represents Gorilla FC?
Jason: Oh shoot, I just saw a good one on the bus the other day.
How about Bumbersticker Idealist with a few Sounders FC decals?
Jason: Ha, I ride the train, but that sounds about right.
It takes a brave girl to stand between a gorilla and his banana.
