Shelter: What to do during a windstorm | PEMCO

At PEMCO, we know these storms can feel unpredictable, but preparation and smart choices during the storm can make all the difference. We’re here to help you stay safe and protect what matters most to you.

1. Stay inside and away from windows

Flying debris is the biggest risk during high winds. Move to an interior room—think basement or hallway—away from glass doors and windows. If you have storm shutters, close them. No shutters? Heavy curtains can help reduce shattered glass risk.

2. Stay put and avoid travel

Roads are dangerous during windstorms. Downed trees, power lines, and poor visibility make driving a gamble. Unless it’s an emergency, stay put. If you’re already on the road, pull over in a safe spot away from trees and power lines.

3. Monitor local alerts

Keep a battery-powered radio or fully charged phone handy. Follow NOAA weather alerts and local emergency updates. Conditions can change fast—knowing what’s coming next helps you make smart decisions.

4. Power down safely

Unplug electronics to protect them from surges when power flickers. If the lights go out, use flashlights instead of candles to avoid fire hazards. If you have a generator, never run it indoors—carbon monoxide kills silently. Similarly, be sure to never use propane grills or heat sources inside.

Windstorms are part of life here in the PNW, but they don’t have to catch you off guard. By practicing prevention (preparing for the storm) and sheltering smartly, you can help make recovery easier and plan for making your home and property even more resilient against storms in the future.

When the winds howl, stay calm, stay informed, and know you’re not alone. If you need to make a claim or have experienced damage from a windstorm, you can file a claim any time, any place in the PEMCO app or speak with an agent at 1-800-GO-PEMCO.
