Redmond’s daily population swings are like night and day – literally.
Census data shows that Microsoft’s home city swells to 111% its normal size each workday, thanks to commuters. Redmond’s 2010 population of 52,000 jumped to 110,000 between 9 and 5 on a typical workday.
Redmond’s surge ranks No. 1 in the entire country. Other cities of note include No. 2 Greenville, S.C., with a daily surge of 98%; No. 4 Palo Alto, Calif., 83%; and No. 6 Washington, D.C., 79%, which jumps from 584,400 to a whopping 1,046,000 each workday. Read The Seattle Times article.
