Oregon may impose fee for studded tires

The Oregon Legislature held public hearings March 6 on bills that would charge drivers a fee to use studded tires, an idea endorsed by Salem’s Statesman Journal in a March 13 editorial.
The Oregon Dept. of Transportation says studded tires cause $40 million in damage to its roads each year.
PEMCO polled Washington and Portland-area drivers about studded tires in November 2011 and learned this: 18% of drivers “always” or “sometimes” install studded tires each winter. And 70% said that wear and tear on roads caused by studs is either a “big problem” or “modest problem”; only 4% said it’s “not a problem at all.” Read the Statesman Journal editorial.
