Pacific Northwest Drivers Confident in Tackling Winter Roads
Despite the Northwest’s reputation for mild weather, winter can still bring icy surprises. Many drivers in the region, though, are confident behind the wheel. According to a recent PEMCO Insurance Northwest Poll, nearly two-thirds of drivers (59%) feel comfortable navigating snowy and icy roads.
In addition to being confident in wintry conditions, 81% of drivers across Eastern and Western Washington believe they’re just as or even more capable than fellow motorists when it comes to managing snow-covered or icy roads. There are differing confidence levels between men and women, however: while 37% of men vs. 20% of women say they feel very comfortable driving in snow and ice.
The poll reveals that a majority of Northwest drivers (64%) credit their confidence to driving in winter conditions elsewhere. Though 58% say they simply drive more cautiously than others on slippery roads.
Half of respondents report the same or even more pressure to commute during icy conditions. This underscores the need for all drivers to learn how and prepare to navigate icy roads.
Given the Pacific Northwest’s unpredictable winters, PEMCO’s NW poll reinforces the need for confidence and preparation. Before the first frost, PEMCO encourages drivers to winterize their vehicles and refresh their knowledge of safe winter driving practices.
