Longwell explains infamous Hasselbeck gaffe

Friday, January 11, 2013by  Jon Osterberg

At last, we know the inside scoop on what prompted Matt Hasselbeck’s 2003 Seahawks-Packers playoff boast, “We want the ball and we’re gonna score!”
The Tacoma News Tribune interviewed new Seahawks kicker Ryan Longwell, to whom Hasselbeck directed his ill-advised comment. (Hasselbeck promptly threw a “pick 6” game-losing interception.) We learn the boast was a playful jibe never intended for microphones. Read about it in this Ryan Divish story.
Longwell is a former Puyallup resident whose holder in 7th-grade football was future Husky and NFL quarterback Daman Huard. Longwell is truly a native Northwesterner: The Seattle Times quotes him saying the highlight of his last Seattle appearance was when hydro champion Chip Hanauer raised the 12th-man flag at Century Link Field. “I grew up here watching hydroplanes,” Longwell said.
