Fall roof inspection: your first line of defense against winter storms

At PEMCO, we believe in the power of prevention. That’s why we’re sharing essential seasonal tips to help you get ahead of winter roof damage, before it becomes a time consuming and expensive home repair.

Why roof maintenance matters

Your roof is your home’s first shield against the elements. But even small issues, like a missing shingle or clogged gutter, can lead to big problems when winter weather hits. Early fall is the ideal time to inspect, clean, and repair your roof while the weather is still cooperative.

Roof maintenance tips to address now:

Perform a seasonal roof inspection

  • Look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles

  • Check for moss, algae, or debris buildup

  • Examine flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents

  • Peek into your attic for signs of moisture or daylight

If anything looks questionable, schedule a professional inspection. A licensed roofer can spot hidden issues and help you prioritize repairs.

Clean gutters and downspouts

Clogged gutters are a leading cause of water damage in the PNW. When leaves and pine needles block drainage, water can either back up under shingles or seep toward your foundation.

  • Remove debris from gutters and downspouts

  • Flush with water to ensure proper flow

  • Install gutter guards if you live near heavy tree cover

  • Check that downspouts direct water at least 5 feet from your home

Make repairs now

Don’t wait for a leak to take action. Address small issues before they escalate:

  • Replace damaged shingles

  • Reseal flashing and vents

  • Patch minor cracks or holes

  • Reinforce areas prone to pooling water

If your roof is nearing the end of its lifespan, consider budgeting for replacement. PEMCO customers often find that proactive upgrades save money—and stress—in the long run.

Trim overhanging branches

Windstorms are common in the fall and winter, and falling limbs can puncture your roof or clog your gutters overnight. Follow our tips for planting and maintaining your trees year-round and call a certified arborist to:

  • Remove dead or weak branches

  • Trim back limbs that hang over your roof

  • Assess tree health to prevent future damage

Bonus: This also helps reduce moss growth by allowing more sunlight to reach your roof.

Prevention is protection

At PEMCO, we’re not just here when things go wrong, we’re also here to help you keep them from going wrong in the first place. That’s the heart of our Love of Prevention philosophy.

So, grab your ladder, perform a seasonal roof inspection, and invest a few hours in home winter preparation. Your future self will thank you.
