Cross-country joy ride took just two days

Friday, July 11, 2014by  Jon Osterberg

Maybe the car thief was racing the clock. Or hurrying to return home to Blaine.
Or maybe the driver simply couldn’t find an ATM anywhere until reaching the Umpqua Bank on H Street.
Blaine police are scratching their heads after they found a stolen 2012 Jeep Patriot outside an Umpqua branch on July 2. The car had been stolen in Miami, Fla., between June 30 and July 1.
That means the thief drove 3,400 miles in two days.
The news story brings to mind a 1971 cult movie, Vanishing Point, in which a car-delivery driver tries to drive a hotrod Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in one day.
