We love educators – the real superheroes!

Have you ever been stuck behind a Bumper Sticker Idealist? You know, the one that keeps you endlessly entertained with reading material while sitting in traffic? It’s one of my favorite PEMCO NW profiles. Recently, while waiting behind a car with dozens of colorful bumper stickers, one in particular jumped out at me: ‘I’m a teacher, what’s your superpower?’

As the daughter of two educators, there’s no doubt in my mind that teachers are superheroes with superpowers! And I love that my company and my colleagues share that belief. Education is part of our DNA at PEMCO – the company was founded by Seattle math and journalism teacher Robert J. Handy in 1949, and we’ve been dedicated to serving and supporting the education community ever since.

That’s why we’ve formed partnerships with educator associations in Washington and Oregon, why we offer discounts to educators, and why you’ll see a dedicated team of agents attending educator benefit fairs and new-employee orientations each fall in school districts in both states. And it’s why we’re proud supporters of programs like the Washington Teacher of the Year awards and Schoolhouse Supplies, an awesome nonprofit that provides free supplies for teachers in Portland Public Schools. (Because, you know, even superheroes can use a little help sometimes!)

We also think it’s important to help shine a light on all the good happening in our classrooms, most notably by partnering with KCTS 9 to share Golden Apple Moments – inspiring stories that recognize excellent educators and programs. It’s one way to honor our company’s heritage and support the education community.

So as I sat behind the Bumper Sticker Idealist, I starting thinking…what would be MY superpower? No matter what I came up with (25 hours in the day, hearing someone say ‘Mom’ from 10 miles away), nothing beats being a teacher – a true superhero.  So, I gave a ‘thank you’ honk and a wave.  After all, it was the least I could do to recognize the superhero driving in front of me!
