Turning 40 never tasted sweeter

   Tucked alongside our latest autographed Tom Douglas cookbook (subtlety splattered with organically raised chicken broth flavored with just a hint of forest-foraged chanterelle mushrooms), is our latest recipe guaranteed to delight any Northwesterner with a love of local flavor: Samoas Crust Cheesecake Slices.
   Our inspiration? This year, that most delectable Girl Scout cookie, Samoas, celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Girl Scouts of Western Washington have cooked up (we hope using a six-burner Wolf gas range) their annual Cookie Recipe Contest featuring – what else? – Samoas. You can even help pick the winner.
   And, when our friends at PEMCO created a Happy birthday, Samoas page to invite Northwesterners to create their own Northwest Profile paying culinary homage to the creation, well, we just knew we had to do something faster than a soufflé falling in a houseful of jumping toddlers. (PEMCO will donate $10 to the Girl Scouts of Western Washington for every Northwest Profile created that lists “Samoas” as the Profile’s diet, up to $4,000. Then, they’ll send it to the Girl Scouts as part of a giant mosaic “Happy birthday, Samoas” card! How tasteful.)
   Now, yes, we know what you’re thinking. “Samoas” sounds positively tropical. But consider the all-important sourcing. The only place you can get Samoas cookies is from your neighborhood Girl Scouts. And it doesn’t get any more local than that. Why, the Scouts are even free-range as they go from door-to-door!
