Mutated wheat discovered on Oregon farm

Friday, May 31, 2013by  Jon Osterberg

Illegal genetically engineered wheat – “Roundup resistant” – was found growing recently in an Eastern Oregon farm field.
Developed by Monsanto, the wheat has not been approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and its existence could threaten trade with countries that oppose genetically modified foods. Oregon exports 90% of its wheat, much of it to Pacific Rim countries.
The unapproved wheat was discovered by a farmer who sprayed his field with a systemic weed killer, but the wheat did not die. He notified Oregon State University, which notified the USDA on May 3. Read The Oregonian article.
