A Kent-Meridian High School senior two months from graduation died following a “car surfing” accident in the school’s parking lot. Lupo Benson, 18, sustained head injuries after jumping on and then falling from the hood of a moving car. He later died at Harborview Medical Center.
Kent School District spokesman Chris Loftis says the tragedy reflects a danger that many students may not realize. “You have the students in the car, students who witnessed this. It has changed many, many lives,” he said. School officials hope Benson’s accident will serve as a wake-up call to other students.
Nationally, dozens of other reports tell of teens being seriously injured or killed in car-surfing stunts. Behaviors like leaning out of a window or sunroof, or being pulled alongside or behind a vehicle on a bike or skateboard have also ended tragically.
With outside influences and peer pressure, it’s important to talk with your teens about these risks and be aware of their activities when behind the wheel or while with other teen drivers. Check out our Dangers of Teenage Driving overview for tips on talking about safe driving with your teen.

This is tragic indeed. I believe Ernest Hemingway, renowned author, said, “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.”  Our thoughts and compassion go out to the family.
