Our Northwest

Hendrix was a hydro geek like many of us

Friday, August 29, 2014by  Jon Osterberg

Imagine my delight to find a color hydroplane drawing done by Jimi Hendrix in 1958.
Yes, Hendrix was a hydro geek, just like nearly all of us Northwest baby boomers.
The late, great guitarist grew up in Seattle and apparently was enamored with the thunderboats of his era. This drawing, owned by Paul Allen and currently on loan to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, clearly shows the pink Hawaii Kai III dueling with the cabover-design Thriftway Too, with Breathless II on fire in the foreground.
And to clear up any doubt, Hendrix captioned the drawing at the bottom, “Thriftway Too overtaking Hawaii Kai III,” and signed his name. He was 16 at the time.
It’s a pretty decent drawing, perhaps indicative of the artistic talent that later blossomed on his Fender Stratocaster.
