Don’t let your home be a mosquito haven

Tuesday, July 28, 2015by  Jon Osterberg

It’s a bad year for mosquito-borne West Nile Virus, and Oregon officials offer help – obvious and not-so-obvious – for how to lessen your risk of infection.
The obvious: wear long-sleeved shirts and full-length pants when hiking. Ensure your screens on doors and windows have no holes. Eliminate any standing water, like in kids’ pools.
The not-so obvious: rid your property of old tires.
     Say what?
Yes, unmounted tires left outdoors can collect water, whether it’s from rain or sprinklers. The longer the water stands, the more it attracts mosquitos.
In fact, residents of Central Point are encouraged to dispose their old car tires for free this week at a collection point in town. The address: 555 Mosquito Lane.
     I’m not making this up.
