Who would Northwest people be more likely to help: two or four-legged friends in need?

According to the 2016 PEMCO Insurance Northwest Poll, almost three-quarters (71 percent) of Washington and Oregon drivers polled say they’re very or extremely likely to take action to help a dog trapped/left in a hot car.

But the poll finds drivers are less likely to lend a hand to fellow drivers in distress. Only about half (58 percent) say they’d help a driver stalled on the side of the road by stopping or calling 911.

How about you? Who would you be more likely to help in a time of need, a dog trapped in a hot car or a stranded motorist?

Imagine that it was a hot day – one when many people had their windows open and/or air conditioning on. If you saw a dog inside a parked car with the windows up and the engine off, how likely would you be to take some kind of action like calling the police, breaking a window in the car or finding the owner?
Total OR
42 44 Extremely likely
29 30 Very likely
19 17 Somewhat likely
6 5 Not very likely
2 3 Not at all likely
2 1 Don’t know
On a similar note, imagine that you were driving on a busy street or highway and saw a stalled vehicle along the side of the road. What action, if any, would you be likely to take?
Total OR
29 25 None – no action at all
28 27 I wouldn’t stop, but I’d call 911 or somebody I thought could help
30 33 I’d stop and ask if I could help them
13 15 Other / Don’t know

About the PEMCO Insurance Northwest Poll
PEMCO Insurance commissioned this independent survey, conducted by FBK Research of Seattle, that asked Washington and Oregon residents questions about driving habits and attitudes toward current Northwest issues. The sample size, 600 respondents in Washington and 600 in Oregon, yields an accuracy of +/- 4.1 percent at the 95 percent confidence level. In other words, if this study were conducted 100 times, in 95 instances the data will not vary by more than the associated error range.
