Do people in the Northwest do enough to protect their identities?

According to the 2016 PEMCO Insurance Northwest Poll, a vast majority of Northwest residents (86 percent) are at least somewhat concerned about their identity being stolen, and half of Washington and Oregon residents (50 percent) think identity theft occurs because businesses aren’t keeping their credit card information safe and secure. Meanwhile, nearly a third of residents (29 percent) are concerned that online shopping could leave them vulnerable to fraud.

Yet, even though they’re worried about ID theft, many Northwest consumers don’t take proactive steps to prevent it from happening, choosing instead to place the responsibility of safeguarding their personal information in the hands of others.

About the PEMCO Insurance Northwest Poll
PEMCO Insurance commissioned this independent survey, conducted by FBK Research of Seattle, that asked Washington and Oregon residents questions about driving habits and attitudes toward current Northwest issues. The sample size, 600 respondents in Washington and 600 in Oregon, yields an accuracy of +/- 4.1 percent at the 95 percent confidence level. In other words, if this study were conducted 100 times, in 95 instances the data will not vary by more than the associated error range.
