Best cars for older drivers

Now that muddy boots season is finally over, you may be thinking it's time to put a new (or new-to-you) car in the garage. U.S. News and World Report assembled a concise list showcasing cars (in a variety of styles and price ranges) especially suited to older drivers. All offer great safety ratings, easy entry and exit, plus controls and displays that don't go overboard on gadgetry.

The list features nine 2017 and 2016 models, but we're guessing that earlier versions would likely deliver many of the same advantages:

  • Subaru Forester, compact SUV with great visibility
  • Hyundai Sonata, midsize sedan with strong reliability and good fuel economy
  • Toyota Highlander, SUV that reviewers say handles more like a car
  • Buick Encore, upscale subcompact SUV with GM's OnStar system for peace of mind
  • Honda Odyssey, minivan with easy access for cargo and passengers
  • Toyota Camry, reliable midsize sedan with a dash design that helps keep your eyes on the road
  • Chevrolet Impala, large, comfy sedan with GM's OnStar system
  • Kia Soul, sporty compact that's affordable, yet safe and practical
  • Chrysler 300, large, smooth sedan for drivers looking for power and the option of rear-wheel drive.
