Keep your ghoul friends safe on Halloween

Yep, we've noticed it, too. Those hordes of superheroes, ghosts, and Disney princesses that once swarmed neighborhoods Oct. 31, pillowcases in hand, have dwindled over the past decade or two.

Maybe it's those handy Harvest Festivals at the mall, worries about unlimited sugar, or just fewer young families living in the suburbs. Still, according to the National Confectioners Association (and seriously, who would know better?), three-quarters of us still buy that bag of Snickers, Kit-Kats, or candy corn to reward the remaining intrepid doorbell ringers.

To ensure your trick-or-treaters come away this Halloween with as many happy memories as you had, here are our top five stay-safe tips:

  1. Keep kids' costumes short enough to prevent tripping and attach reflective tape so drivers can spot them easily.
  2. Inspect your walkway and yard for tripping hazards, and keep your home well-lit.
  3. Keep pets secure. They might be frightened by strange costumes and sounds.
  4. Use extra caution when driving, especially in residential areas.
  5. Illuminate jack-o-lanterns with battery operated lights rather than candles.
