From your perspective:
Will insurance rates be different for vehicles like the new aluminum Ford F‑150s?
— Earl W., Yakima, Wash.
PEMCO, like all insurers, factors vehicle repair costs into rates. When Ford announced that it’s switching from steel to a military grade aluminum alloy for its 2015 F-150 pickups, it cited improved mileage (the pickups will be about 700 pounds lighter) and a modular design that could help repair shops shave hours off their processes, since damaged parts of the vehicle can be “sectioned off” without disturbing other components. We’re eager to see how those changes will impact real-world costs in the shop. The short answer: It’s too soon to tell how these advancements could translate to changes in premium, but it’s definitely on our radar screen.
