SEATTLE – Seafair and Seattle-based PEMCO Insurance announced today the PEMCO Classic vintage-hydro heat will return as part of the General Motors Cup on Sunday, August 4.
Seattle's Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum will prepare at least five roaring, piston-powered vintage boats for the Lake Washington event, which features a warm-up lap followed by a three-lap exhibition race. Miss Century 21 won the 1999 PEMCO Classic, while Miss Bardahl finished first in 2000 and 2001.
"Seafair now has more than 50 years of tradition with unlimited hydroplane racing," said Beth Wojick, Seafair president. "It's wonderful that we can honor that history with the beautiful boats in the PEMCO Classic at the GM Cup."
Previous PEMCO Classics featured hydros from the 1950s and '60s, such as Hawaii Kai III, Miss Burien, and Miss Madison. The Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum currently is restoring the 1980 Rolls-Griffon-powered Miss Budweiser and the 1982 Atlas Van Lines, which original pilot Chip Hanauer is being courted to drive. The Museum also hopes to start restoration soon on the 1970 Pride of Pay 'n Pak.
