SEATTLE – PEMCO Insurance, the Northwest’s largest locally based insurer, recently partnered with Portland-based nonprofit Schoolhouse Supplies to host a month-long teacher appreciation sweepstakes during May. The sweepstakes for Portland-area educators awarded weekly winners with a $500 credit to be used toward new school supplies for their classrooms.
The first annual Teacher Appreciation Sweepstakes encouraged educators in the Portland metro area to enter a drawing for the weekly prize, and for each entry PEMCO pledged a donation to Schoolhouse Supplies. More than 1,470 nominations were entered for weekly recognition and drawings, and four Portland-area teachers each received $500 in classroom supplies from Schoolhouse Supplies.
Luce H. from David Douglas High School, Karen H. from Lakeridge High School, Jeanne D. from Floyd Light Middle School, and Kristen W. from Beverly Cleary School were named the winners, and PEMCO’s final contribution totaled $5,000 to Schoolhouse Supplies.
“We’re proud to continue partnering with Schoolhouse Supplies to support educators and students with better access to school supplies that help them succeed,” said PEMCO spokesperson Jon Osterberg. “We look forward to finding more ways to collaborate in supporting Oregon’s educators.”
PEMCO began serving Oregon residents with auto and home insurance in July 2011 and continues to expand its footprint through community outreach and partnerships with organizations like Schoolhouse Supplies.
Since 1999, Schoolhouse Supplies has enriched student learning by distributing more than $16.7 million worth of supplies to schools in need. It operates Oregon’s first and only volunteer-run free store to provide teachers with the classroom supplies needed to encourage the learning process for all students. It also manages the “Tools for Schools” backpack giveaway program supporting high-need school communities across Portland.
“As we continue exploring ways to deepen the impact we’re making for teachers and classrooms in our community, Schoolhouse Supplies is honored to have the continued support of the PEMCO team,” notes Jen Barth, Schoolhouse Supplies executive director. “We know that our winners will have more peace of mind this summer knowing that we’ll be helping stock their classrooms in the fall, thanks to the generosity of our friends at PEMCO!”
PEMCO and Schoolhouse Supplies plan to host additional teacher appreciation-themed programs in the future. Visit www.shsteacherappreciation.com for updates.
