WSDOT earns kudos for 66-day Skagit repair

The Washington State Dept. of Transportation has been on the hot seat for construction flaws and delays on the new SR 520 bridge.
Yet at the same time, WSDOT directed urgent repairs and replacement of the I-5 bridge that collapsed into the Skagit River on May 23.
Amazingly, a brand new replacement bridge opened for traffic Sept. 15, just 66 days after the collapse.
The Tacoma News Tribune points out that although WSDOT deserves criticism for design errors on the 520 bridge, it also deserves kudos for successfully overseeing the huge Skagit project that impacts 70,000 vehicles daily. Read how everything came together two weeks ahead of schedule, in this Tribune editorial.
