Winter running tips from the Spokane Jingle Bell Run

On Saturday the WALLY team joined the Arthritis Foundation of the Pacific Northwest at the Spokane Jingle Bell Run. We were joined by thousands of runners and families bundled up in their best holiday gear. The Christmas spirit was alive at Riverfront Park Saturday morning where Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by for the seventh year.

As the WALLY team stayed warm with hot cocoa and multiple pairs of socks, the runners had their own ways of beating the cold. It is very important to be prepared for cold weather as a runner to prevent injuries and illnesses.  A few things to always remember when going for a winter jog:

  1. Protect your hands and feet – Wear shoes that won’t let in too much moisture and gloves or mittens that will keep your hands warm. If you’re still cold, try putting hand warmer packets inside your gloves.
  2. Don’t overdress – Once you start running you will warm up so it is okay to start out feeling a little cold.
  3. Cover your head – That’s where your body loses the most heat! Wear a hat or headband that will keep your ears covered.
  4. Don’t forget to hydrate – Even though it is cold, it is important to stay hydrated because you will still sweat and lose fluids during your run.
  5. Change ASAP – As soon as you get home, it is important to change out of your wet, cold clothes to prevent illness.

Winter is a popular time for fun runs, 5ks, and marathons and it is important that you are ready to deal with the cold. The Arthritis Foundation of the Pacific Northwest will be hosting 7 more Jingle Bell Runs this year:

  • December 7 – Port Orchard, WA
  • December 7 – Bend, OR*
  • December 8 – Seattle, WA*
  • December 8 – Skagit, WA
  • December 8 – Portland, OR*
  • December 14 – Bellingham, WA
