WALLY gets a taste of Fremont’s Mobile Food Rodeo

We’d be lying if we told you we weren’t tempted to wander from WALLY and follow the sweet and savory aromas emanating from the food trucks over the weekend at Mobile Food Rodeo. And with Sunday's record-setting temperatures, more than 30,000 other food lovers had the same idea.

With the help of our friends at Biking Billboards, we also offered a chance to win a Sounders FC prize package by participating in PEMCO's Northwest Profile anagram challenge. We challenged festival go-ers to find NW Profile signs amid the crowd and unscramble their profile names for a chance to win.

Sure, the lines were extremely long but only because of the pure love for the food truck industry here in Seattle. There were 50 different food trucks serving up a variety of tasty treats – even our friend, the Portland Food Cartlandian would’ve been impressed!

Throughout the day, we made a point of asking people what their favorite food of the day was and why. Below is a list of the top 5 most mentioned food trucks and a comment on just what exactly makes them taste so good.

  1. Ezell’s
The first thing that comes to mind when you think Seattle fried chicken is Ezell’s. There's no doubt about it that people loved what Ezell's was serving, as it had by far the longest line throughout the day. Ezell's worker Alex told us “they’ve packed just about as much flavor as you possibly can into a single piece of chicken without overdoing it; it’s perfection.”

  2. Grilled Cheese Experience
This one made the list because of people’s fascination with the grilled cheese sandwich. Sure, this sandwich isn't one you typically see in mainstream dining, but by bringing it back onto the scene at MFR, people were reminded just how much better the grilled cheese sandwich tastes when someone else makes it for you.

  3. Street Donuts
We were lucky enough to sample these donuts and let us tell you, they didn't disappoint. They packed a flavorful punch that made it worth the indulgence. The donuts were a nice change of pace from the typical food you'd expect a food truck to serve up, and that’s why they’re on the list.

  4. BUNS
We may be a bit biased because the team had a taste of this for lunch, but BUNS served up one of the top 10 burgers the WALLY team has ever tasted. Those looking for an average burger experience should look elsewhere because these aren't your average burgers. The "Cheesie" definitely lived up to its name, fulfilling our appetites and our love for cheese.

  5. Hallava Falafel
Last but not least is a truck that brought a lot of culture to the event, Hallava Falafel. This truck was so popular that the line ran all the way across into our booth at times, which gave us a great opportunity to speak to people in line and snap their photo while they waited. We asked food-cart-lover Sarah why she was willing to wait in the long line and she replied “why would I not want to wait for something unique at an event that is all about sampling Seattle’s food culture?” We couldn’t agree more.

We had a great time sampling food, taking photos and interacting with the thousands who attended Mobile Food Rodeo this past weekend, and we can’t wait to do it again next year!
