Thief plunges, quickly retreats from icy river

Several communities throughout the Northwest celebrated the new year by staging “polar plunges.”
   Rather than wait for the official Feb. 23 event at Liberty Lake, one man opted for a Spokane River variation that ended in his arrest.
   The 32-year-old, suspected of stealing an SUV, fled from police and dove into the river near Monroe Street, but quickly returned to shore. Not surprising: The high in Spokane on Jan. 1 was 23 degrees. Read the Spokesman-Review story.
