The National Safety Council, survivor advocates, and highway safety organizations took the lead in filing a complaint to Apple CEO Tim Cook about a dangerous in-store ad.
The photo displayed in Apple stores depicts a car full of teens clearly distracted by music and each other, plus an entire back row of passengers that aren’t noticeably buckled up.
The letter states: “Most important, thousands of thousands of families have lost teens in crashes involving multiple passenger distraction, and thousands more have lost teens because they were not wearing seat belts. For those families, this photo is much more than a misguided marketing tool. This photo is a painful reminder of why their teens are not home for the holidays.”
Tim Hollister of From Reid’s Dad Blog shared the letter and image on his blog, along with this link to a copy of the actual letter. Hollister shares tips for parents of teen drivers and has been an advocate for safer teen driving after his teen son died in a one-car accident in 2006.
It’s important to discuss safe and not-so-safe driving behaviors with your teens. Point out what’s good practice and what’s not when you see advertisements like this one. While you might not think twice about a group of friends taking a road trip with their perfect playlist, teens are influenced and captivated by advertisers’ catchy concepts. It will be interesting to see how Apple responds to the group’s letter.
