Perhaps Northwesterners need to mingle more in their own communities. The latest results from the PEMCO Poll show that 41% of Washington and Portland-area residents know fewer than one-quarter of their neighbors, and 87% have never participated in Night Out Against Crime. When they go on vacation, 35% said they rarely or never tell neighbors they’ll be gone. The poll also reveals that people age 55 and older are about one-third more likely to take steps to watch out for their neighbors.
