Participants shine bright at this year’s Starlight Run

We couldn’t have asked for better weather this weekend at the Starlight Run in Portland. We were front and center where more than 7,000 runners of all levels gathered at Lincoln High School to enjoy the pre-race festivities and run in the 5k race.

Besides the rockin' band pumping out classic hit after hit, our favorite pre-race activity was easily the costume contest. But more specifically, the 16 and under age group was very entertaining with their creative minds and awesome costumes. Some of the top costumes were characters from Tron, hippies, pirates, and snails. However our favorite group consisted of two girls who kept it simple; they wore big wigs along with other silly props and had a sign that said “Applause.” Their message to the crowd was simple: Keep Portland Weird. These two were definitely a lot like us...a little different!

After the race, hundreds of participants and spectators stopped by the PEMCO table to take photos in their wild and wacky costumes. We would like to extend a special shout out to the Girls On the Run Portland Metro folks, who all showed up to take pictures with their running buddies. We appreciate everyone who stopped by to hang out with us and we cannot wait to return next year!

As we head for summer, the Northwest sky doesn't get dark until much later in the evening, but there are still those NW Action Figures out there who will choose to take their evening jog when the temperatures cool off. Here are seven tips that will help keep you safe while running under the stars:

1. Wear bright and reflective clothing

2. Wear or carry lights

3. Run on the left side of the road

4. Don't listen to music

5. Run in well-populated areas

6. Run with a friend

7. Pay attention to your surroundings
