Our Nonprofit of the Month program gives employees a chance to champion the organizations that mean the most to them. For November, our employees nominated and chose
The Movember Foundation.
You know The Movember Foundation as the group that has encouraged millions to grow 30 days of facial hair to support men's health. In Movember's words, "Grow a mo, and save a bro."
The Movember Foundation focuses on initiatives on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention, to transform men's health research and boost support globally.
Here's why Rod B. nominated the organization:
Prostate cancer is the second most-common cancer in men in the United States. And it sucks! I can't begin to tell you the number of men I've talked to who have been diagnosed with it. But here's the good news: when detected early, prostate cancer survival rates are better than 98%. Find it late, and survival rates drop below 26%.
I've been fighting prostate cancer for just about two years now. Most people can't tell. They don't see the scars. They don't remember the 37 days of radiation treatment. And they don't see or experience the side effects of the quarterly hormone shots that I'll be injecting for nearly three years by the time my treatment is over. Sadly my story isn't terribly unique.
I learned that I had prostate cancer when, after years of annual exams, my urologist retired and I was referred to a new one. Imagine my surprise when the doctor detected that something didn't seem right. The "unusual lump" led to a series of tests and a biopsy. That's when
my focus took a major shift. My treatment, my family, and helping to change the face of men's health became my top priorities

Seeing the Edge.)
PEMCO has supported The Movember Foundation the past several years – team members participate to honor their family members, friends, and colleagues, and to spread the word advocating for early cancer detection.
This year, we're holding a friendly Apple Cup competition (Huskies vs. Cougars) to see who can round up the most donations. What does the winner get? The honor of lighting our Lake Union headquarters building purple and gold, or crimson and gray.
If you'd like to be part of the fight against prostate cancer and other men's health issues, please make your contribution to the Movember Foundation today.
