Leaving town? Don’t simply vacate your home

If you’re among those leaving town for spring break, or planning to travel for a long summer vacation, take care to ensure your home is looked after.
Why? A vacant house might attract vandals or thieves. Also, there are provisions common to many insurance companies that might exclude coverage if no one is home for an extended period.
That even can apply to theft of a student’s personal property left unattended during long absences from a college residence.
You can avoid trouble by using caution and common sense when you and your children leave for trips and vacations. If your family will be among the hordes who descend on Disneyland, Disney World, and other sunny locales this spring:

  • Take steps beforehand to prevent theft, water damage, and fire.
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to check in on your home.
  • If you’re gone for an extended time, consider using a trusted house-sitter.

Remember, the more “lived in” a residence appears, it’s less likely a crook will break in or vandalize it.
