Black bears are out of hibernation and scavenging for food, thanks to early spring weather in parts of the Northwest.
Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife reports that bears have been active in Issaquah, North Bend, and Chelan County. Because natural food sources aren't yet available, bears seek the easiest source of protein. Typically that includes garbage cans, pet food, and bird feeders. Bears also are attracted to uncleaned barbecue grills.Securing those items lessens the chance you'll encounter unwelcome guests on your property.
"Black bears are hungry when they emerge from their dens, because they lose up to half their body weight during hibernation," said a state official. Read the WDFW news release.
