The WALLY team was excited to attend the Fun with the Fuzz 5k in Bellingham on Saturday, April 20. Over 1000 NW Action Figures of all ages and abilities ran in this year’s event, and some even ran with their beloved dogs. Our favorites were definitely the fierce but friendly German Shepard police dogs.
The winner of this year’s event was Dusty Caseria, with a blazing winning time of 15:26. That’s under 5 minutes per mile! Courtney Olsen came in as this year’s female winner at an equally impressive 17:43. Congratulations to the winners!
This 5k was not only about winning the race, but it also supports the Behind the Badge Foundation. All the proceeds from this race go directly to the foundation, which is responsible for taking care of the families of fallen officers as well as maintaining the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial located in Olympia. The people of Bellingham definitely came together in full force to rally for a great cause.
We must say, our favorite part of the event was running our souvenir photo program. Not only did we take over 400 pictures of the energetic runners and their families, but we had a chance to see police officers let loose in front of the camera and take photos with the runners as well. It was truly fun to see the officers take a break from their serious jobs and have a little fun with the people they serve and protect.
Police officers around the country care about your safety as pedestrians and runners, so here are a few safety tips for when you decide to go running around town:
- Don't wear headphones. Use your ears to be aware of your surroundings. Your ears may help you avoid dangers your eyes may miss during evening or early morning runs.
- Run against traffic so you can observe approaching automobiles. By facing on-coming traffic, you may be able to react quicker than if it is behind you.
- Run with a partner. Run with a dog.
- Call police immediately if something happens to you or someone else, or you notice anyone out of the ordinary. It is important to report incidents immediately
