Our Northwest

California burger to invade Medford soon

Thursday, August 27, 2015by  Jon Osterberg

Burger lovers can be obsessively loyal to their favorite brand. For Medford carnivores, bliss arrives soon: In-N-Out opens there in September.
I’m somewhat of an oddball. I know lots of In-N-Out connoisseurs, but I prefer another California burger chain, Carl’s Jr. Why? The best burgers are char-broiled, like at Carl’s. Plus Carl’s offers unique sides, like deep-fried zucchini sticks and jalapeno poppers.
In Medford, In-N-Out’s arrival truly is a big deal, because it marks the chain’s first foray into Oregon.
There’s good grub at In-N-Out, for sure. I like their double-double “animal style” cheeseburgers. And I’m intrigued by one I read about today called the 4x4, or “quad” – four patties, four cheese slices. Look!
Burger loyalty is like soft-drink loyalty. You’re either a Coke or Pepsi person. Sprite or 7 Up. Dr Pepper or Pibb. Fanta or Crush.
Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi – or, if you’re Austin Powers, Tab.
For much of the Northwest, fast-food lovers choose among national giants like McDonald’s, Burger King, Jack in the Box, Wendy’s, and Dairy Queen. Or they choose among growing chains like Five Guys and Fatburger.
Then there are smaller regional chains like Dick’s, Kidd Valley, Burgerville, Zip’s, Mike’s, and single-location icons like Miner’s in Yakima or Hudson’s in Coeur d’Alene. All have their advocates.
The In-N-Out versus Five Guys battle will be fun to watch out West, because both chains hype their fresh ingredients and lofty quality control.
     Have it your way, Medford!
